Capturing Real Family Moments That Last a Lifetime

There’s something truly special about photographing families. Those little glances, giggles and hugs that show the love and bond you share are what make family photography so meaningful. When I photograph a family, I’m not just taking pictures, I’m capturing the feeling of being together. Those memories become art you can look back on for years to come.

If you’re starting to plan your family photography session, here are a few helpful tips to make the experience relaxed, fun and beautifully you.

Family Portrait Planning Tips:

Planning a family portrait session can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. The key is to approach it calm and openminded. Here are some simple yet effective tips to help you prepare:

  • Choose the Right Location

Pick somewhere that means something to you. It might be your favourite park, the woods where you love to walk or even your own garden. I often photograph families in Coventry and Warwickshire, where we’re lucky to have so many beautiful spots such as Allesley Park, Jephson Gardens and Abbey Fields. The right location helps everyone feel comfortable and adds that personal touch to your photos.

  • What to Wear for Family Photos

There’s no need for everyone to match perfectly. Soft, neutral tones always photograph beautifully and simple textures work much better than busy patterns or bold logos. Most importantly, wear something you feel good in. When you’re comfortable, it always shows.

  • Timing Your Session

Light makes all the difference. The best times for family photography are early morning or later in the afternoon when the sun is soft and golden. These moments create that warm, dreamy light that gives your photos a lovely, natural feel.

  • Add a Personal Touch

Bringing along something meaningful, like a blanket, a book or your child’s favourite toy, adds character and helps everyone relax. It’s often those little touches that make a photo truly yours.

  • Talk to Your Photographer

Before your session, share a bit about your family, what you love doing together and the kind of images you’re hoping for. I always make time to chat before a shoot so I can create something that feels genuine and personal to you.

How Many Photos Do You Get from a Family Session?

This is a question I’m often asked. A typical family photography session lasts around an hour and during that time I capture a wide range of moments, from natural laughter to more traditional portraits.

I prioritise quality over quantity. Because of my photography style and the care that goes into editing each image, my family packages include between 5 and 12 beautifully finished photos. Each one is carefully chosen and edited to reflect genuine emotion and connection.

Helping Children and Teens Feel at Ease

Getting children and teenagers ready for a photo session can sometimes feel like a bit of a challenge, but with a little preparation and patience, it can actually be a really lovely experience for everyone.

  • Talk About the Session in Advance

Have a chat with your children beforehand so they know what to expect. Keep it light and positive, and let them know it’s simply a fun time to spend together. I’ll guide them gently and help them feel comfortable in front of the camera.

  • Keep It Relaxed and Fun

Younger children don’t usually sit still for long, and that’s completely fine. We’ll keep things playful, take breaks when needed, and capture those genuine smiles as they happen naturally.

  • Bring Something Familiar

Whether it’s a favourite toy, blanket or snack, having something familiar helps little ones feel calm and secure during the session.

  • Encourage Natural Expressions

The best photos come from real moments. Instead of asking them to smile, try chatting, joking or playing together. Genuine laughter and connection always look beautiful on camera.

  • Include Teens in the Planning

Teenagers often like to have a say in what they wear or how they’re photographed. Letting them be involved helps them feel more confident and relaxed, which always shines through in the photos.

Capturing Genuine Connection

The most meaningful family photos are always the ones that show how you truly are together. It’s those little moments, the laughter, cuddles and glances, that make your images feel real and full of love. Here are a few ways to help create that natural connection during your session.

  • Focus on Each Other

Try not to worry about the camera. Chat, laugh and enjoy being together. The more you focus on one another, the more natural your photos will feel.

  • Add Personal Touches

Bring along something that feels like you, maybe a picnic blanket, a book you love to read together or even your family pet. These small details add warmth and personality.

  • Be Present in the Moment

Take a deep breath and simply enjoy the experience. When you’re relaxed, those genuine emotions and connections naturally shine through.

  • Trust the Process

You don’t need to worry about posing or what to do with your hands. I’ll gently guide you so everything feels easy and natural.

  • Have Fun with It

The best photos often come from spontaneous moments. Don’t be afraid to be playful or a little silly, as real laughter makes for the most beautiful memories.

Making Your Family Portraits Last a Lifetime

Once your session is complete, the best part begins. Seeing your images come to life in print or displayed around your home is such a lovely feeling. These photos are more than pictures, they’re memories you can hold onto and share for years to come.

  • Print Your Favourites

There’s nothing quite like seeing your photos in print. I always recommend professional, high-quality printing to make sure your images look their best and stand the test of time.

  • Create a Gallery Wall

Choose a few favourite images and display them together in your home. Seeing your family’s love captured in photographs every day is something truly special.

  • Keep Digital Copies Safe

It’s great to share your images online, but make sure you keep your high-resolution files backed up somewhere safe so they’re protected for the future.

  • Plan Future Sessions

Families grow and change so quickly. Booking regular sessions is a lovely way to capture each new chapter and build a visual story of your lives together.

I hope these tips inspire you to plan a family photography session that feels just right for you. Remember, the goal is to create a warm, relaxed experience that celebrates your unique family story. If you’re ready to take the next step, exploring family photography sessions with a professional can make all the difference.

May your portraits be filled with love, laughter, and timeless beauty.
